There are many ways to save on electricity costs. For many Finns, comparing electricity providers is a common way to look for savings. However, this doesn’t actually produce savings, as it rarely affects how the costs themselves are generated. The global pandemic, changes in the world economy, and conflicts that drove electricity market prices very high taught many Finns to save electricity. When both fixed-term electricity contract prices and spot electricity prices were high, the only way to affect the costs was to reduce electricity consumption.
Even though prices have returned from the highest levels to more affordable rates, how and when electricity is used still has a significant impact on the final electricity bill. Spot electricity is the most affordable option when electricity consumption can be timed to those periods when the spot price of electricity is at its lowest. The savings are greatest in detached houses heated by direct electricity, but the savings are also significant in apartment buildings and row houses.
The calculation assumes an electricity price of 8.0 cents/kWh and a monthly fee of 3.99 €/month. The cost savings represent the theoretical impact of optimizing electricity usage during the cheapest hours of spot electricity. The model is entirely theoretical, so it cannot be directly used to estimate your own electricity costs. Its primary purpose is to illustrate how your behavior and optimizing electricity usage can lead to savings.

The calculation does not take into account electricity grid costs, which, depending on the contract, can also be optimized by adjusting electricity usage schedules. The electricity grid service fee can vary, for example, between daytime and nighttime.
