Vihreä Älyenergia » Solar Panels – Profitability and Return on Investment
Solar panels are particularly popular among homeowners and cottage owners, but increasingly, larger companies and apartment building associations are beginning to use solar panels to manage electricity costs as corporate responsibility and environmental values gain importance in businesses. For those considering solar panels, a crucial question is whether the significant investment will pay itself back through reduced electricity purchases. The ROI for solar panels refers to how long it takes for the savings generated by the panels to cover their purchase price. Essentially, after the investment has paid for itself, all electricity generated by the panels is profit.
The time for ROI (return on investment) is a good way to assess whether investing in solar panels makes financial sense in your case. Generally, a solar power system pays for itself in 10-15 years. The technical lifespan of solar panels ranges between 25 and 40 years, so potentially, the system could produce free electricity or yield profits for 10-30 years.
Since electricity is always used closest to its production site, and at certain times of the year, the panels can generate all the electricity needed for a household, this means no transmission fees are paid for the electricity produced by solar panels. The reduction in transmission fees further improves the ROI. However, it’s important to note that there are so many factors influencing the ROI that it only becomes clear during usage. There are currently views suggesting that electricity prices may drop significantly in the 2030’s, which would mean the payback period for solar panels could increase substantially. As recent history has shown, electricity prices can change rapidly and unpredictably. Here are some factors that can affect the time for ROI:

The electricity production of solar panels depends on many factors. Thanks to long summer days, Finland’s annual radiation level is on par with Germany, the world’s largest solar energy producer. The theoretical annual output of solar panels is specified in their design, but the actual calculated output is somewhat lower, depending on the year. However, due to the high radiation levels, a system with a theoretical output of, say, 6,000 kWh will typically produce around 5,000-5,400 kWh per year. In sizing, it is common to use a model where the system generates about 30% of the annual total consumption.
Solar panels produce relatively well across Finland. However, due to the dark winters, solar panels practically don’t generate any electricity during the darkest winter months. Broadly speaking, the majority of solar panel production occurs between March and October, with minimal output from November to February. If solar panels are positioned to receive reflected sunlight from snow, their electricity production can increase. It’s not recommended to clear snow from solar panels, as the friction or impacts could damage them, even though snow and ice buildup reduces their output. In fact, cold temperatures can improve panel efficiency, as excessive heat can diminish their performance, even in summer. Therefore, it’s practical to assess solar panel output on an annual basis.
We developed the Smart Energy app, Älyenergia, to make life easier for solar panel users. With our app, you can track how much energy you use from your solar panel production, how much you sell back to the grid, and at what price. You can see both your consumption and production in the same app!
We also buy the surplus electricity generated by your solar panels without charging a separate brokerage fee or delivery charge! Make an electricity sale and purchase agreement with us, download Älyenergia, and always stay on top of your electricity usage and production.
