Green Electricity

Green with a Guarantee

What is green electricity? It’s not just a slogan, but a promise that the electricity you purchase is environmentally friendly and guaranteed by origin certificates. In the case of Vihreä Älyenergia, it is produced 100% carbon-free, meaning it does not emit carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which is generated by the use of fossil fuels in energy production.

Fossil fuels include coal, lignite, natural gas, and oil-derived fuels. These fuels were formed from biomass and have been stored in the earth for millions of years. We believe it’s better not to use them for energy production because there are much more ecological, in other words, greener energy sources available. These include solar power, wind power and nuclear power. Vihreä Älyenergia uses wind and nuclear power in its products and encourages everyone to leverage solar power when available. There is also hydropower, which we do not use since it blocks the migration of fish and therefore causes fish-stocks to deminish.

Carbon-free sources of energy

Here you can learn more about fossil-free energy sources.

Nuclear Energy

Nuclear power is Finland’s largest source of energy production, and Finland is one of the safest users of nuclear power in the world. Energy production based on fission is almost emission-free, and nuclear waste storage is exceptionally well managed in Finland.

Wind Energy

The construction of wind power is continuously increasing, and Finland is one of the international leaders in this form of energy. Wind power plays a significant role in achieving global climate goals.

Solar Energy

Solar power is a renewable energy source. This fusion-based gift from the universe is practically an inexhaustible energy source, and the utilization of solar power is constantly developing and becoming more efficient. Vihreä Älyenergia does not produce solar power itself, but we support our customers in leveraging solar energy.

Hydroenergy

Hydropower is a fully renewable energy source, offering excellent supply reliability and affordability. It generates very low carbon dioxide emissions, but if poorly constructed, it can harm the environment. Vihreä Älyenergia does not use hydropower because we do not want our energy to hinder fish migration.

What else should you know about green electricity?

The environmental impact of green electricity is minimal, and its production methods are designed to place as little strain on nature as possible. Vihreä Älyenergia’s electricity is certified with a Guarantee of Origin, ensuring it meets strict environmental criteria.

When choosing an electricity contract, it’s important to be aware that the term “green electricity” is sometimes used misleadingly in marketing, where the actual production doesn’t fully match what is promised. While all methods of electricity production generate emissions, renewable and carbon-free methods pollute significantly less compared to fossil-based production methods.

While our competition also offers non-carbon alternatives, 100% renewable energy and similar options, they usually come with a premium. Our green energy contracts are 100% carbon-free without any additional cost.

Fish love us - but why?

All the electricity we sell is carbon-free and fish-friendly, as we do not sell hydropower, which restricts the migration routes of fish such as salmon. In 2019, we were also involved in launching a citizens’ initiative to limit the net fishing of sea salmon in the Tornio River. Additionally, we sponsor initiatives and the protection of fish stocks in our waterways, which is why we have transitioned away from hydropower to other fossil-free energy sources.
